Training crawlers still make up 67.5% of AI-driven traffic, but AI scraper traffic grew 597% as search and summarization products demand constant fresh content.

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince corroborated this trajectory at the SXSW conference on March 19, 2026. Before the generative AI era, bots accounted for roughly 20% of internet traffic. Prince now predicts bot traffic will definitively exceed human web usage by 2027, driven by the insatiable data needs of generative AI models. He noted that while a human might visit five websites to research a purchase, an AI agent will often visit 5,000 sites for the same task, creating massive new loads on web infrastructure.
